Telluride Vacation Rentals, Skiing & Dining

Telluride Colorado is one of the most beautiful ski resorts in America. Conde Nast Traveler Magazine awarded it the best ski resort for the 2017-18 ski season. It's the perfect sized town, the perfect-sized ski area, it's crowd-free, and - unsurpassed in beauty. Telluride’s historic village boasts charming shops, restaurants and family-friendly Colorado vacation rentals.

Telluride’s storied, remote southwest Colorado location makes it unique in the state. While several famous resorts in Colorado are located near Interstate 70 and closer to Denver, Telluride attracts thousands of visitors each year because of its superlative beauty and charm. This valley seems like a secret pocket of golden light and snowy peaks in the Colorado Rockies.

The town of Mountain Village, just up the mountain from Telluride, offers a free gondola service down into the town, similar to Breckenridge’s Peak 8 Gondola service. Staying in this base village allows for vehicle-free transportation to the ski area and runs until midnight all winter. This little ski village has added highly-desirable accommodations for a ski weekend.

The Ski Area

The Telluride Ski Resort is located in a box canyon, which means one way in and out, and it’s one of the unique qualities that makes the town so scenic. The ski area itself offers one of the best mix of ski runs available at any Colorado ski resort. From beginner to advanced, there are plenty of runs for all levels of skier. Ski magazine rated it North America’s best for overall ski resort satisfaction in a 2016-2017 readers’ poll.

The same poll named Telluride best resort in America for scenery and character, which, for many, is part of the enjoyment of any ski vacation.

The San Juan Mountains, where Telluride is located, are home to many of Colorado’s tallest peaks. In fact, it has more peaks over 13,000 and 14,000 feet than any other group in the state.
Words fail to describe the beauty of the town and the surrounding mountains, especially as they light up in the sun.

Victorian architecture gives a visitor the feeling that they’ve stepped into another time. A large swath of town is preserved and registered as a National Historic Landmark.

The towering mountains that surround the village provide a stunning vista in any direction. Bridal Veil Falls overlooks the town and when it’s flowing is the tallest free-falling waterfall in Colorado. It’s best enjoyed in the summer, but it will impress during all seasons.

The ski mountain is vast, offering over 2,000 acres of skiable terrain. 17 lifts can transport over 22,000 skiers up the mountain per hour, which means lift lines are manageable, and you can spend more time shushing through the fresh powder; the resort sees over 300 inches of snow per season.

Ski Culture

This Telluride mountain village is a laid-back enclave that values good times and town pride. Unlike some ski resorts, here in Telluride skiers and snowboarders are both welcomed.

Private and class ski lessons are available for kids and grownups alike. Advanced skiers can backcountry ski by using Telluride Helitrax, the only helicopter skiing operation in Colorado.

There’s plenty of luxury, but this is not a pretentious little town. Telluride is a place for people to enjoy the mountains and the ski slopes and to avoid the typical ski-town crowds.

History of Telluride

The San Juan Mountains were home to the Ute Indians for hundreds of years. When European adventurers came to the area, they found this high-elevation spot, located along the San Miguel River, and built a community on mining. The alpine location was rich in zinc, lead, copper, silver and ores.

First known as the town of Columbia, the community changed its name to Telluride in 1887 to save from confusion with another mining town in California. It’s said that Telluride gets its name from the mining of tellurium minerals. Nearly 350 miles of mining shafts tunnel beneath the mountain.

Ironically, Telluride was the location of the world’s first electric city street light, but today there isn’t a a single stoplight in town!

In the 1970s, the ski resort caused a boom in the town’s economy and building. The historic buildings and charm of this old west mining town have been vigorously preserved by the town council.
New construction primarily happens seven miles up the mountain in Mountain Village.
