Famous Movie Locations in Hawaii

Famous Movie Locations in Hawaii

Have you ever watched a movie set in a beautiful Hawaiian location and thought it would be a nice place to stay on vacation? Here are some spots to consider.

Blue Crush – Filmed North Shore of Oahu

The surfing movie Blue Crush was filmed on and around Oahu. The main filming location, including the surf contest, was the famed North Shore of Oahu. The competition in which Anne Marie (Kate Bosworth) competes is the Pipe Masters, which is truly held at the Banzai Pipeline each year in December. Getting ring-side seats to all of the big wave action is possible by renting one of Exotic Estates' amazing Oahu North Shore rentals.

Note that most homes on Oahu require a 30-day rental agreement, however, Turtle Bay Villas on the North Shore are beautiful ocean-front condos offering beach access, pool, and golf!

"Blue Hawaii" - Filmed Mostly on Oahu

The 1961 film starring Elvis Presley, was primarily filmed on the Hawaiian island of Oahu. Filming locations included Hanauma Bay, a popular snorkeling spot where some beach scenes were shot, Waikiki Beach, featured in various scenes throughout the film, and Diamond Head, the iconic volcanic crater that bookends Waikiki Beach.

We have many beautiful vacation homes near Diamond Head and Hanauma Bay.

The Descendants – Filmed on Oahu and Around Hanalei, Kauai

When Matt King (George Clooney) flies to the Hawaiian island of Kauai, he sets off for a gorgeous beach to confront his rival. That magnificent beach setting is Hanalei Bay. Hanalei is one of the most beautiful beach parks in Hawaii. If you found that scene idyllic, you can rent a home directly on Hanalei Bay for your next vacation, as Exotic Estates has several on offer. Take a look at Exotic Estates' Hanalei vacation rentals.

Gilligan's Island - Located Off Windward Oahu

The island seen at the beginning of the second and third seasons of Gilligan's Island is Coconut Island, located in gorgeous Kaneohe Bay on the Windward side of the island. The island is home to a marine research center run by the University of Hawaii's Oceanography and Marine Biology Departments.

Typically the island is off limits, but fortunately, Exotic Estates has many homes located on the Windward side, especially in and around the beaches of Kailua, which is just to the south of Kaneohe Bay - so unlike the castaways, you will have plenty of luxuries on your vacation! Check out our Kailua vacation rentals.

Papillon –  Famous Scene Filmed on Maui

The classic film Papillon is one of Steve McQueen's best movies. In it, he plays Henri "Papillon" Charrière, sentenced to prison on Devil's Island, located off the coast of French Guiana, for a crime he did not commit. The movie was shot in various locations, including Jamaica. However,  Steve McQueen's famous cliff-jumping scene in the end was shot on the North Shore of the Hawaiian island of Maui. Interestingly, Steve McQueen did the stunt himself! He is alleged to have said the jump was "one of the most exhilarating experiences of my life."

There is plenty of fun to be had on Maui besides cliff-jumping, though jumping off of Black Rock at the end of Ka'anapali Beach is a right of passage for many visitors.

Exotic Estates' Maui vacation rentals offer plenty of creature comforts and are located in various locations, so you can find just the right balance of luxury and adventure wherever you're located!
